The left has a massive agenda for the state at home, and yet complains bitterly, with shock and dismay, that the same tools are used to start wars and build imperial structures abroad. The right claims to want to restrain government at home (at least in some ways) while whooping it up for war and global reconstruction abroad.

It doesn't take a game-theory genius to predict how this conflict works itself out in the long run. The left and the right agree to disagree on intellectual grounds but otherwise engage in a dangerous quid pro quo. They turn a blind eye to the government they don't like so long as they get the government they do like.

Under Stephen VI, the successor of Boniface, Emperor Lambert and Agiltrude recovered their authority in Rome at the beginning of 897, having renounced their claims to the greater part of Upper and Central Italy. Agiltrude being determined to wreak vengeance on her opponent even after his death, Stephen VI lent himself to the revolting scene of sitting in judgment on his predecessor, Formosus. At the synod convened for that purpose, he occupied the chair; the corpse, clad in papal vestments, was withdrawn from the sarcophagus and seated on a throne; close by stood a deacon to answer in its name, all the old charges formulated against Formosus under John VIII being revived. The decision was that the deceased had been unworthy of the pontificate, which he could not have validly received since he was bishop of another see. All his measures and acts were annulled, and all the orders conferred by him were declared invalid. The papal vestments were torn from his body; the three fingers which the dead pope had used in consecrations were severed from his right hand; the corpse was cast into a grave in the cemetery for strangers, to be removed after a few days and consigned to the Tiber. In 897 the second successor of Stephen had the body, which a monk had drawn from the Tiber, reinterred with full honours in St. Peter's. He furthermore annulled at a synod the decisions of the court of Stephen VI, and declared all orders conferred by Formosus valid. John IX confirmed these acts at two synods, of which the first was held at Rome and the other at Ravenna (898). On the other hand Sergius III (904-911) approved in a Roman synod the decisions of Stephen's synod against Formosus; all who had received orders from the latter were to be treated as lay persons, unless they sought reordination. Sergius and his party meted out severe treatment to the bishops consecrated by Formosus, who in turn had meanwhile conferred orders on many other clerics, a policy which gave rise to the greatest confusion. Against these decisions many books were written, which demonstrated the validity of the consecration of Formosus and of the orders conferred by him (see AUXILIUS).

We only dispute the term "revolting" to describe the above scene.

Strategizing for the Return of Tradition

Lately, we've been thinking that our fellow traditionalists have not been thinking strategically enough in the fight -- and, yes, it is a fight -- to protect and bring back the traditions of the Holy Roman Church. It's not surprising, however, because our people are quite a bit less worldly than our opposition. But this may have to change drastically if we are ever to regain power. So here are some of the steps we have in mind for bringing about a Church Counterrevolution:

1. Babies, Keep Havin' 'Em: We hate to use the old cliche that the children are our future, but... the children are our future. And if traditionalists continue to outpace the birth rates of our more modernistic counterparts, eventually we will have the upper hand by sheer numbers. So far, we have been doing a good job at this, but we need to keep it up. That means no birth control!

2. Men, Bring 'Em Back: Research has shown that men are more effective at passing on the Faith than women. This means that we need a more masculine Church. That would involve having fewer sugary hymns, better, more classically themed art, and using altar boys, not altar girls. Also, remember, we are the Church of the crusades. Let's act like it.

3. Ludditism, Drop It: There has been a woefully misguided notion among many of our traditionalist friends that technology is a bad thing. This could not be farther from the truth. Yes, we know about Pope Gregory XVI's opposition to the railroad. But the fact is that those who can effectively use technology will almost always have the upper hand in getting their message out. That's why we simply cannot slack in this department.

4. The Professions, Enter 'Em: Another mistaken idea we've come across in our dealings with Internet traditionalists is that Catholics should work in the trades and not the professions. We have no problem with our fellow Catholics working in the trades and we think that that is a noble pursuit if it fits you. However, we do disapprove of any notion that Catholics should not enter into the professions or that you're somehow less Catholic if you do. It's a disastrous idea, and it ensures that traditionalist Catholics will have far less influence over the world around us. We need more traditionalists in the corridors of power and we need to encourage our young people to be doctors, lawyers, and managers. If we are serious about bringing tradition back, then we will need lots and lots of influential, powerful people to do it. Perhaps one concrete step would be to create scholarship funds for young traditionalists entering graduate or professional schools. Think about it.

By now, most of you have likely heard of this Archbishop in Poland who has resigned over his cooperation with Communits. We would like to make a couple of points:

1. This should be a bit of vindication for those who have feared Communist infiltration of the Church and have been smeared as "conspiracy theorists" for it. Here's a case of infiltration we actually know about. Moreover, according to the article, respected historians are estimating up to 15% of priests cooperated with the Communist government.

When you take all of the above into account with the Marxist "liberation theology" phenomenon in Latin America and what's happening today with the Church in China, a worldwide Communist conspiracy becomes entirely believable. In fact, at this point, it's actually crazier to believe that there was no such conspiracy against the Church.

2. In worldly terms, the only thing the faithful have to protect us against the evils mentioned above is -- wait for it -- TRADITION! That is, as a practical matter, the only thing we have is the faithful stubbornly clinging to the Faith and rejecting any and all novelties. Please note that none of this is meant to put down the powers of the Holy Ghost or of prayer (although even when we pray, or pray to the Holy Ghost, for that matter, it should be done in the traditional manner).

A Liberal Case for Tradition?

We've been thinking this over in our heads lately, and it's recently come out in a conversation with a liberal relative of ours (who is an ex-Catholic), but we think there is actually a pretty solid case for Tradition within the Church from a liberal perspective (although it actually may be rooted more in classical liberalism than in the liberalism of F.D.R.). It's short, sweet, and reasonably easy to understand, so here it goes. Without tradition, we're all basically at the whim of the bishops -- as we are today -- and the reason for why we do anything in the Church is little more than "because the Bishop said so!" Given the quality of today's bishops (most are either evil, incompetent, or some combination of both), this isn't a compelling justification for much of anything. However, if we faithfully stick to tradition, we're at least relying on some sort of precedent that has in some sense shown itself to work over time, and we're not blindly following the domonstrably fallible authority of mortal men. So, Catholic liberals (perhaps a contradiction, we know) should have just as much reason as anyone else to think before scrapping the traditions of the Holy Roman Church.

Why can't this guy just hire (female) hookers and use coke like any normal person would do? Is the Indult a Good Thing?

An argument can be made that traditionalists would be better off had there been no indult at all. If the traditional Mass were made, in a sense, only the property of those who are absolutely committed to preserving tradition, it might actually protect the traditional rite. It would prevent the nonsense that has already occurred (in indult situations) like communion in the hand and use of the new calendar. Also, it would help unite traditionalists, as there would be one less option, and there might be less in-fighting over Indult vs. SSPX vs. Independent vs. Sedevacantist vs. Whatever. Remember, Catholics who attend, say, an SSPX chapel simply for the sake of going to the old Mass are not schismatics. Rome has already spoken on that.

Church Liberalist Hypocrisy

The same people who so fear any kind of liberation for the Traditional Mass also decry what they call "rubricism" (i.e., priests at least trying to offer the Mass in a reverent manner, consistent with the current rubrics). In practice, this means priests can do pretty much whatever they want, just so long as they don't do the Mass of their ancestors. Now, this position is obviously ridiculous, but few people put two and two together to see that that is the position of most Church liberalists.

This is part of why it's so important that the traditional Mass be liberated. It makes the liberalists unconfortable and even a little bit angry. Generally, this is a good thing in and of itself. Additionally, when they're angry, they do things that are stupid -- like telling people what they really think (see above) -- and it can potentially turn others against them.

We've recently decided to buy a tin whistle, and we're getting the Guinness themed one pictured above. Almost all of our favorite bands (e.g., The Pogues, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, and The Tossers) have a tin whistler in the band, tin whistles are relatively inexpensive and easier to learn, so we thought we'd give it a try. As of right now, we have no musical talent whatsoever, so we'll see how it goes.

We have just found a somewhat refreshing moment of honesty from Archbishop Albert Malcolm Ranjith Patabendige Don. Here's a quote from the CWNews.com article, with the important part italicized:

Every day, the archbishop [Abp. Ranjith] disclosed, the Congregation for Divine Worship receives new complaints about serious liturgical abuses, and complaints that local bishops have failed to correct them. If the Church fails to curb these abuses, he said, "people will attend the Tridentine [sic] Mass, and our churches will be empty."

So clearly, dear readers, this truly is a battle of them vs. us. The Novus Ordinarians have their churches and those of us who attend the Mass of All-Time have our churches. Notice, as well, that he speaks of the True Mass as if it's something to be feared. If that is the case, then let them fear us. At this point, we have no reason for moderation of any kind. M&M Duels

Whenever I get a package of plain M&Ms, I make it my duty to continue the strength and robustness of the candy as a species.

To this end, I hold M&M duels.

Taking two candies between my thumb and forefinger,I apply pressure, squeezing them together until one of them cracks and splinters. That is the "loser," and I eat the inferior one immediately. The winner gets to go another round.

I have found that, in general, the brown and red M&Ms are tougher, and the newer blue ones are genetically inferior. I have hypothesized that the blue M&Ms as a race cannot survive long in the intense theatre of competition that is the modern candy and snack-food world.

Occasionally I will get a mutation, a candy that is misshapen, or pointier, or flatter than the rest. Almost invariably this proves to be a weakness, but on very rare occasions it gives the candy extra strength. In this way, the species continues to adapt to its environment.

When I reach the end of the pack, I am left with one M&M, the strongest of the herd. Since it would make no sense to eat this one as well, I pack it neatly in an envelope and send it to: M&M Mars, A Division of Mars, Inc. Hackettstown, NJ 17840-1503 U.S.A., along with a 3x5 card reading, "Please use this M&M for breeding purposes."

Recently, we were talking to a friend of ours, and the thought came to us that U.S. policy does not seem to be internally consistent. Let us give you an example. Regardless of what one thinks of the issues of immigration, profiling (especially at airports and potential terrorist targets), the Iraq War, and Israel individually, it's reasonably obvious that our policies do not go so well when taken together. In other words, why do we attack Iraq and support Israel, thus getting the Mohammedans into a murderous frenzy, and then have relatively open immigration policies and fail to take steps to profile potential terrorists? We're essentially getting the entire Islamic world disgruntled and then inviting them over here. Regardless of one's opinion on any of these issues taken alone, we think it's fair to say that our current combination of policies is purely insane.

Limbo is a theological speculation and the silence of the recent Catechism on this does not remove it from the realm of possibility, even though the view is not so widely held as in the past.

The fact is that NO ONE can enter Heaven with Sanctifying Grace, and so in the case of those who would appear to be guilty of only Original Sin and not personal sin, there is uncertainty as to how God deals with such souls.

Based upon an earlier statement of a Council, many traditionalists still hold that such babies are judged to a portion of hell with minimum suffering. Other views include the following: a place known as Limbo in which the innocent are deprived of the vision of God but are not in any suffering (they have a natural happiness); some sort of baptism of desire, with the asssumption that God gives the soul of such innocents some vision by which they choose God; some test which is put to the soul of each innocent prior to death, by which the soul makes a choice for or against God.

There remains a level of mystery to this, which we will only know for certain at the end of time. We know, however, that God is perfectly just and appropriately merciful, in all that He does.

You read the subject header to this post correctly. We are not, and never have been, "pro-life." We are, of course, against the murder of unborn children. However, that in no way makes us "pro-life." In many ways, one might even say we're brutally "pro-death." We strongly believe in the death penalty -- especially for abortionists, no less. Our favorite saints are the martyrs. We're obsessed with memento mori meditations and vanitas paintings. And our favorite aspects of Church history are the crusades and the Holy Inquisitions. So, no, the term "pro-life" is not an accurate description of our views.
